The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has officially entered what Chinese military observers call the 'Ten-Ship Era' for its Type 055 guided-missile destroyers. This milestone was marked by the recent commissioning and subsequent live-fire drills of the ninth and tenth vessels, the Dongguan and the Anqing. The deployment signifies a rapid scaling of China’s most advanced surface combatants, moving from experimental single-ship operations to a mass-produced, networked force capability.
Displacing over 12,000 tons, the Type 055—known to NATO as the Renhai-class—is widely regarded as one of the most formidable surface warships globally. These vessels are equipped with a universal vertical launch system (VLS) capable of firing a sophisticated array of surface-to-air, anti-ship, anti-submarine, and land-attack missiles. Their primary role has evolved into the 'lead escort' for China’s burgeoning aircraft carrier strike groups, providing a comprehensive defensive umbrella and long-range strike capability.
The commissioning of the Dongguan and Anqing is particularly significant as they have been assigned to the Eastern Theater Command. This move fills a critical gap in the East Sea Fleet, which previously lacked 10,000-ton class destroyers. Situated directly across from the Taiwan Strait, the presence of these advanced platforms is intended to provide a powerful deterrent against regional secessionist movements and potential foreign intervention in the Indo-Pacific.
Technologically, the latest hulls in the series represent more than just a numerical increase; they feature iterative improvements in stealth design and situational awareness. Enhanced composite materials and a refined superstructure further reduce the ships' radar cross-section. Meanwhile, upgraded integrated mast and radar systems have extended the fleet's ability to detect stealth aircraft and manage complex multi-domain battlefields, including the potential integration of hypersonic weaponry.
Beyond their role in carrier groups, the Type 055 is designed for 'dual-system' operations, meaning it can function as a standalone command node for independent task forces. This allows the PLAN to project power in distant waters without the immediate presence of an aircraft carrier. The ability of these ships to operate across multiple maritime regions for extended durations demonstrates the PLAN’s transition from a near-shore defense force to a true blue-water navy.
