Anthropic, the high-flying AI startup backed by Amazon and Google, has signaled a decisive shift in its business model by restricting how third-party tools interact with its flagship model, Claude. Effective April 4, 2026, the company announced that Claude Pro subscribers will no longer be able to use their monthly subscription credits to power external tools like OpenClaw. This move effectively ends a period of permissive access that allowed developers and power users to leverage high-end reasoning capabilities for a flat fee, pushing them instead toward a more expensive 'pay-as-you-go' API structure.
The target of this policy change is clear: OpenClaw, an AI agent that gained viral popularity for its ability to manage complex tasks like inbox organization and flight bookings using Claude’s backend. While OpenClaw offered users a seamless way to automate their digital lives, it also placed immense strain on Anthropic’s infrastructure. By decoupling these tools from the standard subscription, Anthropic is essentially protecting its compute resources and nudging its user base toward its own first-party solutions, such as Claude Cowork.
Internal leadership at Anthropic has framed the decision as a necessary step for sustainable growth. Boris Cherny, who leads the Claude Codex project, noted that the usage patterns of third-party tools are fundamentally incompatible with the existing subscription model. He emphasized that the company must prioritize resources for customers using its direct products and official API. This justification, however, offers little comfort to the developer community, which had come to rely on the predictable costs of the subscription tier to build and test innovative automation layers.
The fallout from the announcement was immediate. OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger and board member Dave Morin reportedly attempted to negotiate a compromise with Anthropic, but managed only to secure a one-week delay in the implementation. As a gesture of goodwill, Anthropic is offering affected subscribers a one-time credit equivalent to their monthly fee, but for many, the damage to the ecosystem’s trust is already done. This transition highlights a growing trend in the AI industry: the shift from experimental openness to a rigid, enclosure-based monetization strategy as compute costs continue to skyrocket.
