Chengdu, long established as the epicenter of Chinese science fiction, is making a strategic leap into the age of artificial intelligence. By launching the nation’s first "Sci-Fi IP + Future Scene" Open Project Community (OPC), the city is signaling its intent to move beyond literary storytelling and into the realm of high-tech industrialization. This move, formalized through a partnership with the global AI community WaytoAGI, seeks to capitalize on the lingering momentum of the 2023 World Science Fiction Convention.
The Chengdu sci-fi sector is no longer a niche pursuit; it is a burgeoning economic engine currently valued at over 25.5 billion RMB ($3.5 billion). With an annual growth rate nearing 9%, the city has successfully cultivated an ecosystem spanning film, gaming, and immersive tourism. The new community, located in the Bailuwan Tech Park, aims to consolidate these disparate threads into a singular, AI-driven production line that accelerates the "creative-to-commercial" pipeline.
The OPC 2.0 model represents a shift toward empowering "AI super-individuals"—creators who leverage generative AI to match the output of entire traditional studios. By providing 2,500 square meters of specialized space, the hub will host up to 100 teams focusing on AIGC filmmaking, virtual digital actors, and autonomous AI agents. This infrastructure is designed to bridge the gap between creative sparks and global commercial distribution through the use of advanced algorithms.
To ensure sustainability, Chengdu is deploying a massive suite of incentives, including access to a 3-billion-RMB future industry fund and specialized "Sci-Fi 13" policy measures. High-profile creators, such as Hugo Award-winning artist Zhao Enzhe, have already signaled their intent to join the hub. By integrating top-tier intellectual property with cutting-edge computing power, Chengdu is positioning itself as the primary source ground for global sci-fi innovation.
