The landscape of China’s premium electric vehicle (EV) supply chain is shifting as Gotion High-Tech officially enters the core ecosystem of Huawei’s automotive ambitions. According to the latest product filings from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the new pure electric version of the AITO M6 will be equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from Gotion’s subsidiary in Yichun. This partnership marks a significant milestone for Gotion, positioning it as a primary supplier for one of the most commercially successful smart-vehicle alliances in the world.
Technological integration is the hallmark of this new agreement. Unlike standard components sourcing, Gotion will provide an integrated supply of both battery cells and battery packs (Pack) for the M6. The vehicle itself is a substantial mid-to-large SUV, featuring a wheelbase of 2950mm and a length nearly reaching five meters. By securing the contract for both the chemistry and the housing, Gotion is demonstrating its ability to meet the rigorous performance and safety standards demanded by Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA).
For Huawei, diversifying its battery suppliers is a pragmatic move to ensure supply chain resilience and cost competitiveness. While CATL has historically dominated the premium tier of the Chinese EV market, the inclusion of Gotion—which counts Volkswagen as its largest shareholder—signals a broadening of the HIMA supply base. As the AITO brand continues to see surging sales figures, particularly with the M7 and M9 models, the M6 is expected to be a high-volume driver, making this contract a lucrative win for Gotion.
This development also underscores the maturity of LFP battery technology in high-end applications. Once relegated to budget vehicles, LFP batteries are now being optimized for larger, more sophisticated SUVs like the M6 due to their thermal stability and cost-effectiveness. As the competition among Chinese smart EVs intensifies, the ability to balance advanced software features with reliable, affordable hardware will define the winners of the next decade.
