Kunlun Wanwei, the Chinese internet giant once known primarily for its social media and gaming ventures, has signaled a decisive shift in the global generative AI landscape. The company’s subsidiary, Tiangong AI, announced that its annual recurring revenue (ARR) surpassed the $800 million mark in the second quarter of 2026. This milestone, fueled by a pivot to 'AI-native' entertainment, sent the parent company’s shares soaring by more than 15% in intraday trading.
The star of the portfolio is DramaWave, an AI-powered short-form drama platform that alone accounts for over $700 million of the total ARR. Following its full transition to an AI-native model, more than 80% of the platform’s new content is now autonomously generated by AI. This marks a significant departure from traditional production cycles, allowing for a volume and speed of content creation that was previously unimaginable in the media industry.
Technologically, Kunlun’s success rests on its 'Skywork' full-modal foundation. By integrating video, music, world models, and multimodal text engines, the company has built a self-sustaining ecosystem for short dramas, music, and gaming. This integrated approach allows the firm to bypass the high licensing costs that plague traditional streaming platforms, replacing human-led production with scalable, proprietary algorithms.
Financial data from the first quarter of 2026 further underscores the global nature of this expansion. The company reported a total revenue of 2.57 billion CNY, a 45.7% year-on-year increase, with overseas markets contributing a staggering 2.49 billion CNY. This 49.3% surge in international revenue suggests that Kunlun’s AI-generated content is finding a receptive audience far beyond the Great Firewall, challenging Western content creators on their own turf.
