China’s lifestyle platform Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) has announced a fresh crackdown on what it calls “AI托管” accounts — accounts that are managed, partly or wholly, by automated systems or third‑party agencies using AI to generate posts, replies and engagement. The platform framed the move as a quality‑control and trust measure: automated, mass‑produced content and outsourced account management, it said, erode user trust and distort discovery algorithms.
The announcement signals stricter enforcement rather than a new law: Xiaohongshu will step up detection, tighten penalties and expand the scope of prohibited behaviours to include accounts that systematically outsource posting and interaction to AI services or so‑called “management” firms. For creators and marketers the immediate practical risk is account suspension or deletion, curbs on monetization and blacklisting of associated services.
This action fits a wider trend in China’s digital governance. Over the past two years regulators and major platforms have tightened rules on content provenance, the use of generative AI and manipulative engagement practices. Authorities have demanded clearer labeling of synthetic content and stronger controls on recommendation algorithms; platforms have responded with policies to limit fake engagement, deceptive reviews and hidden advertising.
