The Brief

China News Service reported that China is undergoing a historic shift in chicken trade from net imports to net exports. Although China ranks as one of the world's leading poultry producers, it remained a net importer from 2019 to 2024. Net chicken exports were achieved in 2025 and continued to expand through the first three quarters of this year. The domestic broiler sector seized global consumer demand for cost-effective, healthy poultry by pursuing both high-end and emerging markets, alongside fresh-frozen and deep-processed products. Last year, frozen cut chicken from Gansu was exported to Azerbaijan for the first time, and Shanxi exported frozen chicken to Uzbekistan for the first time this year. Technological advancements and large-scale farming have boosted Chinese chicken production, enabling large-scale exports while satisfying domestic demand. Stable bulk feed production, established supply chains, refined enterprise management, and efficient equipment reduced production costs, helping domestic chicken secure an international market presence.

Why it matters

Following the implementation of seed industry revitalization, 3 domestic white-feather broiler varieties gained official approval and expanded market share. This strengthened breeding security, reduced corporate reliance on expensive foreign grandparent stock, and provided a path for livestock to compete internationally.

China context

Before 2019, China was long a net chicken exporter. Following a 2018 domestic African swine fever outbreak that slashed pork output alongside an avian influenza drop in chicken production, chicken imports surged significantly over subsequent years to bridge meat deficits.
