The Brief

China News Service reported that a construction road built for the Funan Techo water conservancy project site has secured safe travel for residents of Dayuan village in Borei Cholsar District, Takeo Province, during Cambodia's peak rainy season in October, even as surrounding rural roads were submerged. China Road and Bridge Corporation, the contractor executing the major water conservancy project, planned to build a new construction access road and consulted with the local administration and residents. Following thorough assessments, the project team chose to widen the alignment along the residential settlement to align local livelihood needs with construction demands, facilitating smooth access for construction machinery while providing villagers with a smooth, wide road during the rainy season. According to Liang Panxue, the project production manager, palm trees covered the route prior to the official start of work, prompting many local villagers to voluntarily contribute their labor to help clear the trees.

Why it matters

Villager Yorn Titi, whose duck farm serves as the primary family income source for three children, supported the expansion when officials consulted him, subsequently reporting greater convenience in traveling to town to sell rice and ducks without fear of seasonal flooding.

China context

Dayuan village in Borei Cholsar District, Takeo Province, has long suffered from floods. Prior to April of this year, the route was a potholed dirt path less than 3 meters wide that large construction vehicles could not access, and floodwaters submerged it every rainy season.

Key Takeaways

  • 1China Road and Bridge Corporation planned a construction road and held consultations with local authorities and residents.
  • 2The builder expanded the route through the village settlement to satisfy construction requirements and community transport needs.
