The Brief

China News Service reported that experts and scholars from Chinese universities, research institutes, coastal earthquake departments, and marine organizations gathered in Sanya on 7 for the third Hainan Marine Earthquake Science and Technology Exchange Seminar. Attendees examined marine seismic monitoring and exploration, disaster risk prevention and control, and data applications. The seminar featured keynote reports, thematic presentations, and two special breakout venues. The Hainan Earthquake Agency and the Department of Ocean Affairs of Hainan Province hosted the meeting around the theme of sensing deep-sea rhythms to empower safe development. Zhou Weixin from the China Earthquake Administration noted that expanding marine industries, offshore wind power, and cross-sea transport corridors require stronger earthquake risk management and tsunami warning capabilities. Zhou urged teams to concentrate on core technologies, original innovation, research commercialization, and knowledge sharing to assist maritime governance. Guo Hongyi from the Hainan Earthquake Agency stated that Hainan administers extensive sea areas, making marine earthquake observation and hazard control vital for local development. Guo added that the agency pushed forward planning, monitoring deployment, scientific innovation, and open cooperation, aiming to build an open marine seismic innovation system that coordinates land and sea. Participating specialists shared recent findings regarding marine seismic observation equipment, land-sea data fusion, and tsunami disaster assessment and warnings. Their exchanges also covered seabed structure exploration, island volcano monitoring, and the marine deployment of distributed optical fiber sensing.

Why it matters

Wang Yihe from the Department of Ocean Affairs of Hainan Province stated that the department will work with earthquake authorities to advance marine monitoring network systems and comprehensive survey frameworks, while deepening the integration of observation resources and data sharing.
