The Brief
China's market regulator has coordinated a sweeping vehicle recall covering nine major automakers—including Tesla, Geely, Xiaomi, and XPeng—over interior emergency mechanical door handles that blend into cabin trim. Officials warned that poor visibility and difficulty operating the handles could delay passenger egress and external rescue if a severe collision cuts low-voltage electrical power. In Tesla's filing alone, nearly three million domestic and imported vehicles are affected, prompting physical warning labels and over-the-air software updates to roll down windows after an accident.
China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has announced a coordinated recall affecting nine automotive manufacturers due to safety concerns surrounding interior emergency mechanical door handles, according to reports from People's Daily and IT Home.
The recall covers vehicles from China FAW, BAIC BluePark, Dongfeng Motor, Chery Automobile, Geely, XPeng, Leapmotor, Tesla, and Xiaomi. According to the regulatory notices, the interior emergency mechanical door handles in affected vehicles have colors closely matching the surrounding cabin trim, making them difficult to locate and operate in high-stress situations.
Regulators warned that during severe collisions where the vehicle's low-voltage electrical system fails, occupants relying on electronic door release switches may be unable to open the doors electronically. If the manual mechanical override handles are not easily identifiable, passengers could face delays escaping the vehicle, and external emergency responders could encounter difficulties during rescue operations.
Tesla filed detailed plans for its portion of the recall with SAMR through its Shanghai and Beijing corporate entities, with corrective measures scheduled to take effect on September 25, 2026. The action covers 973,156 domestically produced Model 3 vehicles manufactured between March 4, 2019, and April 29, 2026, as well as 1,956,713 domestically produced Model Y vehicles built between November 16, 2020, and April 30, 2026.
In addition to domestically manufactured units, Tesla's recall includes imported vehicles: 35,590 Model 3 units produced between August 22, 2018, and November 20, 2019; 8,328 Model X units produced between October 27, 2022, and February 13, 2026; and 2,123 Model S units produced between January 18, 2023, and February 10, 2026.
To resolve the hazard, Tesla will install warning labels on emergency release handles free of charge for affected vehicles that do not already have them. The company will also deploy an over-the-air (OTA) software update to window control systems to implement an automated post-crash window roll-down strategy, offering an additional safety channel if doors remain jammed.
