The Brief

According to China News Service, China Science and Technology Museum held a media event on October 15 for its senior science communication experience space, themed on traveling with science, which runs at the museum through October 31. The initiative serves as an action implementing the Senior Scientific Literacy Action from China's Outline of the National Action Plan for Scientific Literacy (2021-2035), marking an effort to advance from physical accessibility to accessible services and segmented popular science. Organized along a narrative route, visitors receive mailing cards, pass an identity-shift station, navigate four thematic stations covering a century, ancient texts, creative ideas, and new knowledge to gather stamps, and finally deliver reply letters to redeem outcomes. The program features three participation modes matching different visit durations: a relaxed browsing mode with no tasks, a check-in mode with 6 fixed stamping spots, and a task-based stamp collection mode where accumulated stamps can be exchanged for cultural creative prizes. During Respect the Elderly Month in 2026, the venue also freely shared electronic display boards and meal-themed interactive board game sets with more than 50 science and technology museums nationwide to conduct synchronized local activities.

Why it matters

At an identity-shift point, 5 sets of professional wearable gear simulate senior vision, hearing, mobility, and touch sensations, allowing younger visitors to experience aging states and encouraging intergenerational understanding.

China context

Since starting on Double Ninth Festival in 2025, the project has prioritized understanding older adults before designing resources, yielding 20 core interactive exhibits, 3 standardized execution plans, and a mobile senior science communication space.
