The Brief

People's Daily reported that a graduation ceremony took place in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, where two guide robots, one inspection robot, and one piano-playing robot finished certified training across more than 2 months and formally advanced into actual application scenarios. Hangzhou Robot School hosted the event with an entirely robotic student body. Jointly built by the Zhejiang University Robot Research Institute, the Zhejiang Institute of Quality Science, and industry leaders, the facility serves as an industrial enablement platform focused on brain empowerment and agent integration to mature products. At the end of June this year, an initial cohort of 30 robot students matriculated at the school. These enrolled units represented sectors including industry, services, security, and culture and entertainment, submitted by small and medium-sized enterprises alongside relevant government departments. Following testing of physical hardware and software compatibility, the institution divides training across technical, healthcare, arts, and physical education specialties. Trainees complete personalized curriculums before undergoing third-party skill evaluations to earn qualification credentials granting industry access.

Why it matters

After iterative mobility and pipeline training to distinguish water stains from fluid leaks, Hangzhou Qisheng Intelligent Technology's robotic dog deployed to industrial facilities, utility corridors, and rail transit to conduct temperature checks, liquid identification, gauge reading, and alarms.

China context

Hangzhou Robot School founder Zhu Shiqiang stated that although motion control advanced significantly, the global 3-year survival rate for robotics enterprises falls below 10%, while the 5-year survival rate remains under 3%. Many startups build capable hardware chassis but struggle to transition bare-metal machines into mature commercial offerings.

Key Takeaways

  • 1Four robots graduated after more than 2 months of training to enter operational assignments.
  • 2Hangzhou Robot School admitted an inaugural group of 30 robots from varied industries in late June.
  • 3Enrolled machines undergo individualized training across four distinct specialties before taking formal skill qualification assessments.
