Human Hands-On Skills Retain Irreplaceable Value Alongside AI Growth

Xinhua News Agency reported that skilled workers from diverse sectors competed across 64 events at the 48th WorldSkills Competition held in Shanghai, raising questions about the enduring value of manual mastery as intelligent devices and algorithmic programs automate repetitive, standardized positions. Artificial intelligence operates with defined boundaries, leaving human talent irreplaceable during critical stages such as initial creative conception, detail finalization, and overall quality control, while fields like woodworking and antique book restoration rely on manual finesse that algorithms cannot replicate. Valuing manual skills does not entail rejecting innovation, as seen in the competition's addition of 7 new events, including rail vehicle technology, drone systems, and smart security technology, underscoring human-machine collaboration as central to evolving industry needs. Institutional platforms and policy measures are also expanding to support skill upgrades, such as an initiative launched in Shanghai this year providing training and certification for artificial intelligence recommendation officers to empower individuals to master tools.
