The Brief

China News Service reports from Baojing County in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province, where Huangjin Village features lush tea trees on hillsides and a market at the base of the mountains offering specialty items such as tea beer, tea beverages, and tea pastries. Peng Xuejuan, sales director of Baojing County Dingsheng Golden Tea Development Co., Ltd., stated that the enterprise owns tea gardens and purchases fresh leaves from villagers. Beyond processing green and black tea, the firm launched combined tea and medicine products this year, selling nationwide via physical operations and livestreaming. Baojing County committee standing member Teng Wenyang stated that the countywide planting area expanded from its 2006 baseline to current cultivation, helping tea farmers achieve local employment near their homes and increasing their per capita income. A covered bridge named Tongxin Huangjin Bridge was built in Huangjin Village after new social class members nationwide accumulated matching donation funds through public welfare walking donation steps in 2022, serving as a witness to local industrial development.

Why it matters

Xiao Hongbo, deputy general manager of the cultural tourism business unit at Leyard Leafun Culture, stated during an interview that the covered bridge resolved travel problems for villagers and also provided a convenient tea trading market for the local area.

China context

Teng Wenyang stated that in the past, a small river separated village settlements. During flood periods, wooden bridges were washed away by floodwaters, making it very inconvenient for villagers to cross the river to pick and transport tea leaves.
