China's Robot Exports Surge as Domestic Manufacturers Expand Global Reach

China’s robotics sector recorded strong foreign trade performance in the first half of 2026, building on its 2025 milestone of becoming a net exporter of industrial robots. Customs data shows industrial robot exports reached 6.29 billion yuan in the first six months, up 18.6 percent year-on-year. Driven by regional hubs in Zhejiang, Guangdong, and Shanghai, shipments expanded across diverse segments, including surgical devices, cleaning equipment, and quadruped robots deployed in high-risk infrastructure overseas.

China's transition from a net importer to a net exporter of industrial robots reflects significant progress in domestic core algorithms, component production, and system integration. The rapid expansion of specialized robotics exports highlights how China's high-tech manufacturing capability is increasingly integrated into global industrial and commercial supply chains.

Chinese robot manufacturers expanded their overseas presence in the first half of 2026, continuing a momentum that saw the country become a net exporter of industrial robots for the first time in 2025, according to data from the General Administration of Customs (GACC). In the first six months of 2026, Chinese industrial robot exports reached 6.29 billion yuan, marking an 18.6 percent year-on-year increase and reaching buyers in 141 countries and regions. Total exports for cleaning robots and smart bionic models—which include quadruped units, humanoid designs, and bionic fauna—reached 18.09 billion yuan over the same period. According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Chinese-developed quadruped robots now account for nearly 70 percent of global market sales, while Chinese manufacturers offer over 400 humanoid robot complete units, representing more than half of the worldwide total. Specialized segments also recorded notable growth: surgical robot exports reached 480 million yuan in the first half, up 3.3-fold year-on-year, with destination markets expanding from 23 to 49. Regional manufacturing clusters served as primary export drivers. Zhejiang province posted over 1 billion yuan in total robot exports in the first half, with smart bionic robots accounting for over 400 million yuan, or roughly 60 percent of China's national total in that category. Quadruped inspection robots from Hangzhou-based developers have been deployed in Southeast Asian facility patrols and at Switzerland’s largest nuclear power station for high-risk autonomous inspection. In Guangdong province, industrial robot exports grew 16.8 percent year-on-year, representing 23.6 percent of the national industrial total, with strong demand from European, North American, and Southeast Asian industrial clients. In Shanghai, combined exports of industrial, smart bionic, and surgical robots grew 1.2-fold, led by surgical device exports rising 2.4-fold. To accommodate specialized shipment needs—such as multi-battery configurations subject to dangerous goods classification—local customs authorities have implemented digital documentation systems and dedicated trade codes to streamline clearance and track emerging robotics segments.
